The Role
I really got to know my team very well. They made a real effort to include me in their team meetings and outings. They assigned me work that was interesting and made sure we all planned ahead to ensure I had a plan for the week. The overall environment in the office was friendly and everything really seemed to take an interest in the interns.
By the end of the internship, I really felt I was making a difference in others people's work - I could help research a client issue and be able to bring up previous cases or points that could be of interest for the manager and was also able to use various systems, taking away some workload from colleagues in the office.
The first few weeks were really focused on training and understanding legislation - however, I set up meetings on my own if I had any questions and actively approached assiociates, seniors and managers regarding various issues I encountered. The internship really relies on you approaching others for help and ensuring your questions are answered.
On average, I had about 6-7 hours work each day. I worked across various departments and that way I had more work and a larger variety each day. I had to approach various people on my own and work to my own schedule and manage my workload on my own.
I was asked to research various client issues and prepare drafts of documents and emails to clients, which were overseen by an associate, senior or manager.
This is an area I am hoping to go into in the future, so it was very beneficial to see what happens each day. I was also asked to research a topic and present in front of the entire team, so I learned many soft skills throughtout the internship. The training was useful and will help once I begin working after graduation.
The Company
The employees were generally quite relaxed, friendly and very approachable. I really enjoyed coming into the office each day, people seemed to genuinely care about one another and regularly got together after the workday.
The general gist of the internship is to find out how first year graduates work in EY. Therefore, you must rely on yourself to be allocated to projects, clients and meetings. Because a lot is self-driven, you are in charge of your internship experience. Beyond that, the Summer Internship was very helpful in terms of answering questions and preparing our introduction and end-of-internship events in London.
I received specific training to the client or issue I was researching. I also received very detailed personal feedback throughout my internship, which was very helpful to see where my strengths and weaknesses were.
National Travel
Received my offer a few weeks after the internship ended.
The Culture
All the interns in the office got along very well and we frequently met after the workday for dinner or drinks.
Edinburgh is quite an expensive city in terms of going out, especially in the city centre, but it is quite manageable with a budget.
I was in Edinburgh and we had the Fringe Festival going on until the end of August! Fantastic atmosphere and Edinburgh in general has a great nightlife!
The recruitment team and my service line team had various events ging on after work, which let everyone know each other better outside of work. We also had team lunches during spme workdays.
