The Role
I wholly enjoyed my placement as i was able to see the daily functioning of a major construction project, through working on the Queensferry Crossing Project. This meant i was able learn about various techniques and methods of bridge construction and see them applied.
There were a lot of people working as part of the Employers Delivery Team on the project, but I was consistently given the opportunity to be involved in things around the office.
If i needed any support with anything, my internship supervisor was always on hand to help, however, i was always given the opportunity to carry out tasks using my own initiative.
I always had work to do, but never so much as to overwhelm me.
I given work to do and was allowed to carry it out myself, it was then checked by my supervisor once complete.
The skills i have gained from this internship will help me in my final year of study and beyond as it has helped me to understand a variety of different techniques and concepts, as well as better understand client to contractor communications . It has also allowed me to better develop my personal communication skills through report writing and passing on information, something which will be invaluable in my future career.
The Company
Friendly but busy
The internship was very well set up and it was always clear what i was supposed to be doing and where i was supposed to be from the start.
I was asked to complete ethics training on the company intranet and was given site specific training, but that was the extent of it.
Job prospects were never discussed during the internship
The Culture
There was always an opportunity to get involved in organised events with colleagues.
I traveled from home each day, so there was no change to the cost of living.
Again, i traveled from home so there was no change. However, the placement was close to Edinburgh which has an excellent nightlife.
I was always given the opportunity to get involved in organised activities outside of work
