The Role
I very much enjoyed my internship with EY. Initially we were made to very welcome with an enjoyable and informative induction week. I was in direct tax and cycled between the different teams on my internship (International tax, Real Estate and Infrastructure, Business tax, Transaction tax) and in each team I was given work that was interesting and relevant to what the whole team was working on. I had to work to deadlines and juggle a number of tasks making the workday stimulating. I experienced a number of different
Everyone in the office made an effort to make the interns feel welcome, they were a laugh to work with and they were willing to take time out of their day to help me understand and progress. I could see that the work I was given had relevance to the overall project and so it did feel as though my input was useful.
My supervisor was really friendly and very helpful throughout the internship, giving me advice and support throughout. She was always willing to help with any issues I may have had. I had to request regular feedback from the teams I was working in and I would go over this every so often with her and we would discuss how I was progressing and how to improve certain aspects of my approach.
I was always busy with something to work on. Most of the time I was juggling a number of tasks and so would have to time and prioritise my work. Any down time could be filled with extra side projects I'd been given or a bit of research relevant to my service line or a particular case. The workday went by really quickly because I always had something to do which made it a lot more enjoyable.
I was given a lot of responsibility on a number of tasks but obviously I was limited in how much I could do having an obvious lack of experience and knowledge compared to my colleagues. We were given two presentations to deliver to members of our team and to senior members of other service lines. The other work I did assisted my colleagues in what they were doing
The skills gained on the internship will very much be of use to me in the future. It gave me an invaluable insight into the world of professional services and I helped develop key skills like how to build an effective network, time management and general business acumen.
The Company
Everyone was a really good laugh and willing to have a joke but it was obviously primarily a work environment so sometimes people had to stay focussed on their work but overall it was a very good working environment.
Really well organised. The induction week gave us chance to become accustomed to the firm in general like what was expected, the core values etc. and then I was on a rotation system between the different teams within direct tax. Each team had work lined up for me as I started with them and the internship always ran smoothly and never seemed disjointed at any point.
They invested a lot of time and money to give us an enjoyable and structured internship on the whole from initial induction right through to the leavers ball. They made sure we were given all the appropriate information to succeed and excel in our role.
I have a job lined up with them after my gap year!
The Culture
During my 6 week internship (not including the induction week) I went on 3 socials in total and they were all fun and a good way to get to know some of your other colleagues that you hadn't already met. One of them was a crystal maze style day where we were put into teams to tackle some problem solving type activities. Luckily the sun held out for us too!
I was staying in my student house so it didn't cost any extra. The rent for that is £75 per week.
Manchester has a great nightlife scene and caters for all tastes so it was really good!
There were a few, like 5-a-side football, but a lot of it would only come from if you asked to get involved or made yourself known. Opportunities like that didn't get offered as a standard part of the internship. It was more a case of just general socialising really.
