The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement - it was really interesting doing something different and experiencing working in industry.
I felt extremely valued. My opinions and suggestions were always taken into consideration.
At the beginning of my placement, I was given a lot of guidance while I was being trained. Even after I was working independently, my manager was always there to discuss any problems, answer any questions or listen to suggestions I had.
I always had something to do. I think this does depend on how much effort the individual puts in though. I was definitely busier after I had settled into my placement, as I understood how long processes took and how to do them, so I could work efficiently.
I was given quite a lot of responsibility and independence. For example, I was trusted to work in the labs alone and also to help and train up others.
The training I received will definitely come in useful for future lab work. Also, I have gained a good understanding of research and development, and this will help me in my masters year at university. Working full time in industry also allows you to recognise what skills you have and how you have improved them.
The Company
The general atmosphere was positive and everyone was very friendly.
Fairly well organised - we had lots of training and tours during the first week. Could have been slightly better organised with regards to clothing for the labs, as we didn't receive our labs coats etc until over 1 month into the placement.
There was no particular training which the company put on for us, but we did undergo a lot of the compulsory training for working in industry which was useful.
Company Parties/Events
Fairly appealing, as I enjoyed the work I did and also working with my colleagues. My placement has also helped me decide that I would like to work in industry in the future.
The Culture
All the interns got on well. This was probably helped by the fact that most of us lived together. It was really helpful that AkzoNobel worked through a company that found us a house with other interns.
Cost of living was quite expensive, as we were in the town centre. Socialising cost was about average.
Quite good - lots of places to choose from.
Every now and then we were notified of clubs etc to join outside of work, so there were some opportunities.
