The Role
I enjoyed my work throughout the year, and I certainly would not say it was struggle.
I always felt valued by the people I worked with directly, and by my supervisors. I do feel that had I been integrated into project work that included more people in the department, I could have been of more benefit, and therefore would have been more valuable by the rest of the group. However, everybody in the office was extremely supportive of my work.
My lab supervisor always happily gave me all the support that I needed and asked for. Similarly support was given by my line manager.
This varied dramatically throughout the year. In the first few months whilst I was still finding my feet and needed lots of supervision in the lab, I was less busy. However once I had gotten stuck into my project i was busy in the lab for most of the day.
I was given a great deal of responsibility as I worked on a project on my own, therefore I was solely responsible for the lab work on that project.
The skills I learnt at AstraZeneca will be invaluable to the rest of my degree and my career. I cannot express that enough!
The Company
The office had a very friendly and chatty atmosphere. There was never any tension.
Whilst I was able to get on with my project and complete the required work for my university without any major problems, I know that some of the other students had some issues with getting enough work.
They invested in me just by giving me the placement in the first place. There wasn't a great deal of training after this point, however we were allowed to attend any seminars on site that we wanted to.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
I would certainly consider returning to AstraZeneca or a similar company latter in my career.
The Culture
Definitely yes! The majority of the students lived in the same area and we spent a lot of time together inside and outside of work. I have made some really good friends from my placement year.
The house prices were much lower than what I am used to at university. However the cost of socialising was slightly higher due to not being close to students!
The night life in Macclesfield was fairly limited, but there are a few bars to go to.
I joined a gym in macclesfield which runs a wide range of classes.
