The Role
As a student who wanted to experience the real world of consulting, North Highland could not have been a better choice As it is smaller than The Big 4, you are placed amongst the graduates and treated exactly the same which means you are straight onto project work wih real responsibility. I found this rather intimidating at first but everyone is so lovely and understanding- it was not long until I was a true North Highlader and enjoyng every minute of it.
As with most companies, there were some individuals who responded to me very well but it was a shame that some struggled to take my contributions very seriously due to my position as an intern.
This totally depends on your project, the level of oversight and who your engagement lead is. On my first project, my manager had a very laid back tyle which worked well for me as I prefer to take a task and run with it. I knew I could reach out to him when I was struggling but he gave me a great deal of freedom. On my second engagement, this was not so and we had daily catch ups and he always wanted to check my work. This was not bad but found myself much less comfortable.
Extremely- although this was mosly by choice. I took on numerous extra roles such as being involved in the community team, being a mentor on the university business challenge and creating a new course but most roles in consulting will keep you busy as there is always work to be done.
A great deal- as a smaler company, they cannot afford to have the interns doing 'leg work' and proof reading for example, you have a role and are accountable for key deliverables for your client.
There was less training than what you would receive at most large firms but it meant I got as much work experience as possible into my year. I think I would look to spend some time with one of these companies when I graduate so I can do a bit more.
The Company
Free pick n mix and ping pongis great but it was a shame that people formed notable groups that were sometimes difficult to break into.
It couldnt really be organised- it depends what project are running at the time and the demand for individuals at analyst grade. When you arent on client work you will be working on something internally.
There were some usefl courses such as excel and 'geek speak' but more consulting based courses would have been useful.
Financial Bonus
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
After graduation I would prefer to be at a firm with more internationl opportunities and exposure to more training courses but I certainly see myself returning to NH later in my career
The Culture
There were only 5 of us so we tended to organise activiites ourselves
The office was in Covent Garden so expensive! I found living, commuting and socialising a real stretch on the budget my income allowed
The variey of nightlife in london is great- but expensive so you need to be sensible.
There wasnt a great deal of time to do much- I joined a local gym and visited parks/ markets at the weekend.
