The Role
On the whole I really enjoyed my placement. I worked on a range of projects and attended a number of enjoyable events. As with any job some days were better than others and I did have a bad day every now and then.
Probably one of the best things about working at Telefonica is that you are treated as an equal and not belittled. Every 6 weeks all interns in the business had a 2 hour 'wargame' session with the head of business, who is one level below the CEO. This shows how much Telefonica valued us. Telefonica constantly emphasised how interns were the future of the company and that our opinions and views were important.
I was in a bit of a difficult situation as I was based in Leeds and my manager was in Slough. However, my manager was great and always provided me with help when I needed it. Also everyone I spoke to in the company was happy to answer my questions and provide me support. People understood that I was new to the company and that I needed support.
My workload often varied. When I first started I wasn't very busy, as I was mostly learning and getting to know the company. Once I had settled in I was working on anything from 1 to 5 projects at once, so I always had something to work on. My workload also varied deepening on the quarter, as certain quarters were busier than other due to things such as the iPhone 6 launch.
I was given a good amount of responsibility during my placement. I worked on a leaflet that was used in a number of stores nationwide and I produced work that I had to deliver to senior members of the company.
I did pick up a lot of valuable skills on my placement and I received some great training. They won't really help in my degree, as they don't really apply to what I am studying. However I feel that when I am working the skills I have picked up will be invaluable
The Company
I worked in the Leeds office so the atmosphere was very relaxed. Obviously people were still professional but at the same time there was banter and everyone had a good laugh. People wore jeans, t-shirt and trainers to work, so it was by no means formal. There are no assigned desks or private offices so everyone sat together, regardless of seniority
The internship was very well set up. We had 2 induction days in which we learnt about the company and met senior members of the company. There were regular meetings held just for graduates and interns and we received our business use devices straight after our induction
Telefonica placed a large emphasis on personal development. When you start the company you need to set objectives and personal development goals and these are reviewed throughout the year. 121s are regularly held with your manager, during which you go over your progress and what you want to get out of your placement.

If you are an intern and apply for the graduate programme you are fast tracked to the assessment centre, so there is a very good chance of future employment.
The Culture
The social scene was rather good. We often organised night outs, meals and trips to the cinema. Being based in Leeds there was plenty to do but even the interns based in Slough often went out in Windsor.
Being based in Leeds my cost of living was rather cheap. Rent was reasonable, going out wasn't too expensive and food was a lot cheaper than the south.
Having a number of universities in the city made the nightlife in Leeds very good. There are a lot of places to go out and the types of places vary. The cost of going out wasn't too expensive either.
Telefonica run a programme called 'Think Big' which held various events centred on helping the wider company. Helping school kids improve their CVs and helping out at a farm were a few of the events that were run.
