The Role
Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience, with many lessons learnt. I felt valued and like I played a vital part within my team.
Everyone who I have worked for has been very appreciatitive of the work that I did. I felt like a valued team member, respected and as though I was trusted to carry out work on behalf of others.
My manager was often not in the office, however she was always available to support me if I needed help. If she was unavailable, there were plenty of other people I would have been able to talk to. My manager and I had weekly catch-ups, during which I was able to bring up any concerns.
The workload varied from day to day, with some days much busier than others. Nonetheless, if I felt as though I had either too much or too little work, it was easy to talk to my manager to see if anything could be done to help.
At UBS, they treat industrial placement students as employees. It was strongly emphasised throughout that whilst on placement, we were doing a job. I was very much expected to be self motivated, to get on with my own tasks, and to ensure that I could do whatever I can to help out the other team members.
Business experience is invaluable, regardless of what you study at University. Being part of such a large organisation has exposed me to many procedures and processes that I would otherwise not have been exposed to. I have learnt some very important lessons on attitudes, and behaviours within the workplace. The actual work itself did not go hand in hand with my studies, but there were overlaps. Regardless of this, there are many skills I have built upon which can be transferred into my studies.
The Company
The passion behind the people I worked for was great to see, they really cared about their jobs and ensuring they do a good job. Working for people like this motivated me to do the best job possible too.
This is only the second year a placement student has worked in my team. With the dynamics of this industry, my role was constantly changing, which made the work very interesting.
The company pay for the IMC qualification, which is a very well recognised course. Alongside this, there was a UBS university, which ran courses which were possible to sign up to.

Within the organisation, I would definately consider applying for a job. The only inconvenience is the commuting.
The Culture
There was plenty of different colleagues to socialise with at plenty of events.
I lived at home during my placement year. The cost of living in London was very expensive, as was the cost of commuting - bit of a lose lose situation.
Despite thinking London would be expensive, if going for drinks after work, there are many places that run happy hours. Therefore, this makes costs much more bearable. Generally, nightlife was great.
The placement students at UBS were very sociable. We had weekly socials, which involved drinks and nights out. There are weekly emails which inform you of any events that are due to take place so there is plenty to get involved in if you wish.
