The Role
I have really enjoyed being part of my team - everybody is very helpful and approachable and also good fun! I feel I have ample responsibility, dealing with client requests and looking at the administrative side of client accounts, and if you show an interest and enthusiasm in the work there is the chance you will be offered yet more responsibiliy. We deal with a wide variety of custodians and other asset managers on a daily basis, as well as colleagues across the world which is exposure I feel you wouldn't see in many other Industrial Placement roles.
In the team I was part of, they see the Industrial Placement student role as fairly vital in undertaking particular daily/ monthly/ weekly administrative tasks and manual checks. We have a team email address which helps to co-ordinate everyone and means you have access to correspondence so you can keep up to date with ongoing issues and problems even if they do not directly concern me as an intern. In this respect you can take an interest in a wider variety of problems that occur across the business and this helps to greatly expand your knowledge.
I had timely one to one meetings with my line manager and also felt the rest of my team were very approachable if I had questions relaed to the job role. For the first 2 months of my placement I had a handover period from the previous intern which really helped to make me feel reassured and settled in to the role and the team when I first started.
The work flow varied and was fairly ad-hoc. I had certain very busy periods at the beginning of each month and at each quarter end as there are certain administrative tasks that are required to be completed, some with fairly tight deadlines. I quite enjoyed the ad hoc nature of the work as it meant the work was varied and not every day was the same.
The level of responsibility you were given depended on your enthusiasm and the attitude you faced the work with. I felt that, as an intern, I was given invaluable exposure to a large amount of the business and also to external contacts at custodian banks and other asset managers. I also had the scope to redevelop certain adminisrative processes if I so desired and to adapt the processes as time went by.
I have certainly expanded my knowledge of Corporate Finance and as an Economics student this will greatly help my final year studies. I feel I have become much more confident as a result of this role which will assist me when applying for graduate roles, and I will be able to relay my experiences in the finance industry when I attend interviews.
The Company
The atmosphere was really good and the other members of my team were all really good fun. The office was open plan which meant it was always easy to ask a question or to talk to other members of my team. Work was taken seriously in a good sense of the word and you could tell everybody found their work very interesting and applied themselves appropriately.
Really well, there was a large group of 14 month Industrial Placement students and the placement is very well structured, with introductory talks about various aspects of the business within the first few months. Each intern is offered the opportunity to to undertake the IMC qualification, funded by UBS, which is an exernally recognised certificate that I will be able to put on my CV in the future.
Each intern had the opportunity to take the IMC qualification, funded by UBS, which is an externally recognised certificate and also helped to increase my knowledge of the finance industry. I took part in many campus recruiting days as the face of UBS visiting university campuses and talking to both undergraduate and graduate students about opportunites at UBS.

Unfortunately there is no graduate scheme for UBS Global Asset Management however there are a number of opportunities in other areas of the business such as Investment Banking and Wealth Management. I would strongly consider applying to these areas in the future as I think it is a really good business to be involved with.
The Culture
There was a really good social scene with many interns organising weekly nights out and socialising activities. Most of the interns were of the same age so this also helped to contribute to the good social scene.
Drinking out was very expensive however if you organised to visit bars in groups there was often an incentive in the form of discounted drinks or vouchers. Restaurants were also very expensive and gym membership was quite a substantial fee. However with the salary I received I found the cost of living generally to be very manageable.
Really good and we had many intern organised nights out to the local bars and clubs. The clubs were extremely expensive however I guess this is to be expected in the City.
Yes, I joined a gym and used to go to a variety of different exercise classes during the week. There was also a work organised netball team that I know some other interns got involved with.
