The Role
I definitely enjoyed my time at UBS. I was on the Emerging Markets strategy desk, which is definitely an interesting place to be these days.
I was given responsibilities from day one, while being highly supported by members of the team. These tasks were usually based on the existing skills that I acquired at uni, while giving me the opportunity to develop new skills. All colleagues including management were aware of my achievements, and helped me improve whenever needed.
Feedback was aways constructive, with both achievements and any shortcoming being highlighted by every member of the team. The mix of responsibility and support helped me grow on a very steep learning curve.
As in many roles in banking, the daily load of work depends on market conditions. In case of a major event in Emerging Markets (political/economic/financial) we would typically work harder, which could include working late at night or even during weekends. But equally some other times would be less busy.
I was given responsibilities from day one, and felt integrated into the team very soon after the beginning of my placement. My tasks usually included working on small or larger projects, which could be based on my current university skills but not always. In any case the support from other team members and the regular feedback helped me achieve these responsibilities successfully.
The skills that I learnt at university were definitely useful for this internship, and my team members were very keen on learning new techniques that were freshly learnt from the academic world, which I think made a big impact on my overall performance and my integration within the team. The application of these skills to the work environment and the possibility to get a critical view and dig further into what I had learnt at uni were a fantastic opportunity to develop my skills.
The Company
The atmosphere was always very friendly and people around me were always eager to help me when I needed. This atmosphere was not limited to recent graduate but was actually an overall impression across all ranks within the firm, up to the top management.
The industrial placement is not as strctured a placement as the summer internship can be. However as an IP I was ofter invited to summer intern events, both learning and social events. There were also network events organised for IPs and ex-IPs now working within the firm.
I was given all the infrastructure you can need to work properly from day one. I had a lot of support from other members of the team and elsewhere in the firm. I was also invited to campus events abroad to share my experience with current students.

As an IP you are eligible to the Graduate Programme, provided your performance is high enough and the fit with the team was good over the time of the placement. I am currently in the process for recruitment into this programme, so fingers crossed !
The Culture
The social scene was quite intense: we were incldued in all summer intern social events, and we organised events for IPs on our side. The firm also organised networking events for IPs only.
London is obviously quite an exepensive place to live. But the pay at UBS is quite competitive, which makes is easy to live comfortably close to your workplace.
I was in the Liverpool Street office, in the heart of the City, so the nightlife was excellent, with lots of restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs very close by.
Absolutely, there are plenty of clubs / charities / museums you can join or visit very close by. The firm also provides an Art Pass for all employees, which entitles you to discounts in museums or other cultural events.
