The Role
I enjoyed my placement very much. My colleagues were fantastic and really made me feel part of the team. My team as well as the rest of the office made made the experience fun and interesting.
Extremely valued. Right from the start I was given more responsibility than I ever could have imagined an intern getting. My work was sent directly to clients which gave me a sense of importance which is a fantastic thing to have.
There was an overlap period and so the old intern was around for a bit to help get me settled in, which was very useful. The transition period made things a lot easier for me. The more senior members of the team were busy, as you'd expect, however they would always make time to explain something to me or help me when i needed it.
Most of the work I did was sent over from another department in the firm and so my workload would depend on them. Most days were fine and easy to cope with with the ormal hours being 8:30 to 6:30. However, occasionally I would go through quieter phases and then suddenly have 20 things sent over in the space of a week. These periods could be stressful.
I was given a huge amount of responsibility from the first day. The reports I wrote were sent to clients as they're source of information on what they had invested in. I would also be able to go to meetings and be on calls where I was free to speak.
I havent gone back to uni yet, but i'd imagine that this expereince will be very helpful when i do. I'm not sure how much of what I learned here will be useful, depending on the modules I take. However, the working mentality and the writing/speaking/presentation skills I have gained will hopefully be transferred into my studies. In terms of beyond, this experience will definately help me, I am more accustomed to working life, being professional and I have a greater understanding of the investment industry as a whole.
The Company
Fun and friendly. My office was small, only 6 people, so it was often quite as people were away at meetings or busy, but the mentality was very team oriented and so it was often lively with discussion.
Quite well. We had routine talks for the first few months where senior staff form areas of the business would talk to us (interns) about their jobs, which i found interesting. Apart from that though there wasn't much else provided and I simply carried on with work as if I was an employee (maybe that serves as testament to their good organisation). There wasnt any training, but I personally didnt feel like I needed it.
There was no training, it was all on the job. However I was able to complete the IMC (Investment Management Certificate) during the placement, which is something elese to add to my CV and will also help if I take investment modules at uni or the CFA later on.

This role does not directly lead to a job, but will give me an advantage if I choose to apply for the grad scheme.
The Culture
Relatively we would normally meet on thursdays for drinks around the area, although during busy periods we would go out less.
I lived at home, so I only paid for my travel which wasnt too bad. Drinks could be pricy unless we went during happy hour. London doesnt have to be that expensive, it just depends on where you go.
It was ok, there weren't really any clubs, just bars, which i prefer. Nothing special though.
UBS didnt orgainse anything, so not really many opportunities. There was a lot of volunteering opportunities but that was it.
