The Role
So far, it has been great! Not quite what I expected, but I am far from disappointed.
I know that the work that I contribute is valued by my colleagues; and that for my direct superiors it is essential.
For the most part I found that I had to muddle my way through my first few weeks. While at the time it may not have been the best experience, I learned extremely quickly and was glad that I had figured a lot of things out on my own.
At the beginning, I wasn't too busy. I think my managers were giving my time to adapt. After a month or two, the workload grew noticabley. It's better now that I am busier though, as the time passes faster; and even though I have a lot of work, I have never left the office too late.
My responsibility has grown over time, as I become more confident with various aspects of my work. My managers clearly noticed this, as they began to give me more work.
After a couple of months in my placement, I realised what I wanted to do my final year dissertation on; which has really set me up early with being able to start research. My placement has also helped me realise what I want to do after university.
The Company
It was very quiet in my office. While this may sound boring, I liked it as it meant that I could get a lot of work done quickly.
I guess it was fairly well organised. However, working in a company that offers so many different internships, I think that no one experienced the same placement.
There are always opportunities for development. Aside from compulsory modules, there are 100s of optional ones that anyone can take part in. Along with these, there are frequent calls that you can dial into to learn about different parts of the business.
Unfortunately there is not a Graduate programme in my particular field, however there are similar opportunities in other areas of the business.
The Culture
Most definitely! We usually get together once a week for drinks. On top of that, a lot of friends from university also worked in the area so I was able to see them a lot as well.
It is extremely expensive in London; however getting paid offsets the costs.
Nothing compares to London nightlife.
There are plenty of volunteering opportunities, along with clubs and societies.
