The Role
I enjoyed my time at ARUP and found the people very helpful. I gained a lot of valuable experience.
My colleagues were always happy to help and often would go through work i did not understand. They also helped me with university work.
My managers would give me a good level of responsibility whilst also providing me with guidance in the form of the graduate engineers.
Initially i had some free time whilst i got used to the computer software but after a week or so I was very busy and would often stay a little late.
I was given a lot of responsibility to which i enjoyed having. The managers gave me my own deliverables as part of projects which encouraged me to manage my time efficiently.
The skills were difficult to correlate with university as it was a different skill that were required. However everyday skills such as organisation, communication and time management definitely improved.
The Company
The atmosphere was very good as I was a little worried nobody would talk and it would be silent. It was quite the opposite.
It was difficult at the start to get going as a few placements students started the same time as me and therefore not enough work was provided for us all. After a week or so, we all found our feet and the structure of the placement was actually very good.
They invested heavily in me, taking me to client meetings, allowing me to go on site visits and doing all associated training which comes with that.
Very good, we are currently talking about a graduate position in the company.
The Culture
Yes we would regularly go for friday night drinks at the local pub. The company also hosted a number of events
Due to me studying in the same place as the work placement, I had already paid for my rent and therefore there was little additional costs.
The nightlife was much less quite due to the summer months and hence most students had left.
Yes they regularly went for drinks after work. They do a lot of hiking in the peak district which i had the opportunity to go on. They also had a company football team which they encouraged everybody to get involved with.
