About You
"Insight" perfectly describes my time at ARUP. It helped me see what life is like in the office, both in general and at an engineering firm.
Having completed the tasks assigned to me and seeing the benefit it had on alleviating an important workload within the team, I felt valued and know I helped the team out at a busy time.
I received guidance and was left to myself until I encountered any problems or had a quick progress check by a team member, which was perfect for me.
The insight into office life and experiencing working at a company like ARUP was by far the most important part of my work experience. I'm sure that if I had more time at ARUP, I would have further improved some personal and more academic skills, but my time was limited.
The Company
The tasks assigned to me were clear and I knew who to report to and when to report to them. I was given plenty of information with regards to the location of the office, health and safety, company standards etc.
The team I worked in was very busy at the time so it was very much a "head's down" atmosphere, though the people within the team were very welcoming and helpful to me.
I feel that I didn't have enough time at ARUP to be "invested in." However, I was told that I should definitely apply for an internship as I got on well with the team and thew work.
Working alongside graduate engineers meant that I could see the role that I may be applying for in a year's time. They gave me the greatest insight into what a full time role within ARUP would be like.
I feel that I knew quite a bit about the company culture at ARUP before my placement. My time at ARUP more or less confirmed the thoughts I had on ARUP's culture.
I'm still not entirely sure where I am going with regards to a career. I know the area that I'd like to study in, but I'm not sure where that will lead my in terms of a career just yet.
Everything Else
I was paid well for my placement. (Can't select radio button for some reason).
There were opportunities for networking with people from within the team, but given the length of my stay, I rarely had contact with others.
I didn't attend any network/social events during my time at ARUP, so I am unable to comment.
Yes, from sports teams to weekly pub meets.
ARUP are a fantastic firm and I'd definitely recommend them to anyone I knew interested in experiencing what it's like to work at a big engineering firm. In fact, I already have.
