The Role
I really enjoyed my time working with Arup over the summer. I got to work with a really nice group of people on some interesting projects.
I felt that all the work that I did over my time at Arup was appreciated. The office was really busy, with a lot of large projects going on at the time i was there. So some of the time I felt I might be getting under peoples feet by asking questions, but everyone was willing to help me and appreciated my help when it was given.
Support was always on hand when needed, after being directed in what to do I could always ask follow up questions or get help if i was particularly stuck. I never had anyone constantly looking over my shoulder so it allowed for me to try working things out for myself, but support was always there if needed.
Really busy all days, there was always a lot to do. I never ended up sat around looking for anything to do, there was always something new to move onto if i had completed a task.
I felt that the work that I was doing actually helped with the projects that were being completed in the office. I was left to get along with a lot of the tasks by myself and had these checked by my supervisors if needed.
The skills I developed using specific software really helped me with my further studies at University. The experience also really helped in applying for jobs and graduate schemes.
The Company
Really nice group of people, always would take time to talk to me and ask about what I was doing etc. if they weren't busy.
There was always something for me to do but I did end up doing a single project for quite a long period of time so saw less of a variety of projects that I could have done. The interviews for the placement were also left very late compared to other companies, meaning that if other offers were made, replies had to be delayed as Arup was my 1st choice for my placement.
Completed induction training on health and safety, both on and off site and other inductions which were required in the 1st week of my placement.
Was contacted by a member of the employment staff about applying for graduate jobs after placement was completed.
The Culture
Was only at the company for 5 weeks so it's hard to so much, but all the graduates I talked to seemed happy with the experience at the company.
