The Role
Really enjoyed my internship, was very relevant to my degree and was given a real insight into the company.
By the end of my placement I was given more and more responsibility which naturally made me feel valued by my colleagues.
Whenever required I felt I could speak to someone about problems with my work, however, this wasn't too often as tasks were kept simple and instructions were clear to begin with.
This varied from week to week. In general I felt I could have been made to be a little busier, but the timing of my placement meant that the office was a little short of jobs, so I fully understood that there were times I'd have little to do.
During my placement the amount of responsibility I was given increased week upon week. It wasn't lots but was enough for me to feel valued and relied upon by certain members of the office.
The skills were very relevant and the internship was with a company I would like to work for once I have graduated from my degree. I was given the opportuntity to see the various tasks completed by engineers at Arup which really taught me a lot.
The Company
The office was very friendly and open. The group have a very good nature and like to have fun as well as work hard. It can be laid back but not too much, a good balance between work and fun.
The internship was relatively well organised. There were a few days where I was left with little to do which could have been organised better but that was done to office work load and maybe difficult to plan in advance.
The company worked hard to allow me to gain experience on a number of computer software packages that would be relevant to my future career which was very useful for my personal development.
I would very much like to work for Arup one day and am already in the process of applying to one of their graduate schemes.
The Culture
There were not that meany interns at the company during the time that I was with Arup. Only one other at the time but we met regularly for lunch and enjoyed socialising.
Cardiff is not an overly expensive city in comparison to others of a similar size. There are plenty of places to eat and socialise and somewhere for everyone depending on their budget.
Cardiff has a good night life scene with popular venues, I would recommend to all.
As my internship was quite short I didn't get involved in any activities outside of work, however, there are activities such as 5-aside football that I would have liked to have joined in with had I been there longer.
