The Role
I worked in the Structures team, and the work was difficult at times but very rewarding.
Although some members of staff were very busy, everyone made an effort to be friendly and welcoming
My manager was very supportive and patient when I inevitably made mistakes.
Mostly I was kept relatively busy. There was always something to do, but not too much time pressure which was nice. Occasionally there wasn't any work, so I practised using the different types of software through tutorials.
I was given quite a lot of responsibility although I always had the reassurance that my calculations and modelling would be carefully checked.
I think this placement has been really helpful in teaching me about how an engineering consultancy operates and also giving me a taste for structural engineering which I think is the career for me.
The Company
Everyone worked very hard, but there were plenty of opportunities to have a chat over a cup of tea. There were also several trips to the pub and other places in the evening.
The placement was very well set up. I was given my own desk and always kept busy with work.
I was only at the company for around 6 weeks so there wasn't much opportunity for training but I did go to some lunchtime lectures and I was able to use tutorials to learn some of the software.

I am very interested in working for Arup in the future.
The Culture
There were only a few other placement students but we regularly met up for lunch.
I worked in the Cardiff office which is where I study, so there was very little extra cost, and the city is very cheap.
Cardiff has a very good nightlife.
There were a few organised events, sports teams, a cycling race and of course pub trips.
