    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed working with the team that I was placed and I felt that I became part of the team very quickly. The project that I was working on was very interesting and I enjoyed how fast pace the job was and saw how the team reacted to it.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • When I came into the team they really needed an extra pair of hands and my work felt valued and appreciated.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Every time I wasn't sure about how to do something everyone in the team was very happy to stop what they were doing and to come over and help me.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There were some days that I was busier than other days but overall I had something to do or a meeting to attend.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was putting together drawings that were going to be submitted to the client and I was taking minutes of the weekly client meetings.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt how to set out drawings and how to conduct myself to other people the office and to clients. I also learnt how to use different software which has helped me back in University as I feel coursework that requires drawings and the use of software I am able to do so.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone in the office was friendly and easy to talk to.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • All the team knew that I was arriving and I had my name on the desk which was very nice. The only problem was that my name was spelt incorrectly so logging into my computer and the printer was difficult. Logging onto my computer was sorted but the printer was never sorted so I had to ask someone else to print for me for the whole internship.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As I was there for a short time there wasn't time for me to go for training. But I do feel that being the team that I was in meant that I could see first hand how they handled the client and any problems that arose and from that I learnt and developed personally.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Arup is my first choice as a company that I want to work for. I felt that the PM of the team was very keen for me to join and gave me lots of tips to how to apply and when to apply.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We went on a few team lunches and I went on a client dinner with my colleagues. Through these I got to know everyone a lot better on a personal level as we were out of the office environment.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was living at home but having to pay for my commute which was very reasonable.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Leeds is a great city to have a nightlife.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were lots of opportunities that I received information about but as I was only there for a short time I was unable to join in.
