The Role
This placement was very rewarding and challenging, and I learnt a lot about how the financial system and investment banks work; as well as discovering which parts of the industry I would like to work in. Although this sound generic, it was particularly true of the internship with UBS and I have done three internships in total now. UBS was by far the best.
I felt very valued by my team who gave me a lot of opportunities to do the real job, talking to traders, sales people and other researchers to add value to the business.
You get support and guidance throughtout the placement but it is still important to ask for specific feedback and ask as many questions as possible as this whay your boss will give you the most productive feedback.
I was extrremely busy everyday, often feeling like there is not enough time in the day to complete all my tasks. Each task can often be a heavily time dependent one in itself with news flow coming out in the market. This was part of the fun during the internship and it meant I was able to learn an enormous amount each day and experience some of the pressures involved with working in the markets
Not running the show, but I felt like I was given a huge amount of responibility once I had proved myself capable to my collegues. I was able to take work from my team which was then used in the businesses and I felt directly responible for part of what UBS was saying at certain times.
My Maths degree bares little relation to the internship experience
The Company
It was extremely fast paced and exciting. There is a buzz around working in the markets at such a big bank and UBS certainly has that.
It was a very large and organised internship and felt very well structured.
We got a week of training at the start of the internship followed by numerous programs throughout including activities that took time from senior members of the business.
Company Parties/Events
The Culture
Lots of other interns which makes it a fun 9 weeks regardless of your division. Also a lot of grads and a good atmosphere.
Very expensive in london as everyone should know but you earn enough during the internship not to worry about that.
London is good.
Some but not much other than stuff organised by other interns or grads. Work is very busy though so you dont need to much else to do over the summer other than some socialising after work etc.
