The Role
Really good insight into technology within the financial industry. Would recommend to anyone interesting in technology, interest in the financial industry is a plus but I wouldn't say this is particularly necessary.
Was placed within a team and was immediately brought up to date with the project. Within a week or two was working on the project making real contributions to the team.
Team members supportive and willing to help you learn new concepts etc. Management structure was very good, everyone was approachable.
Busy most days but never hectic. Very normal working hours 0830/0900-1700.
After initially being brought up to date was given work related to the project as well as other side project work. Within a few weeks was treated very much like an employee and not an intern. (good thing)
Day-to-day work was primarily working in Java and supporting frameworks. Learnt above and beyond what they teach at university (real work skills within technology). Also opportunities to work shadow different sectors. Experience has helped me decide on my career after university.
The Company
Very laid back environment. Open plan office, no real sense of a hierarchy within the office and senior management very approachable.
To start with team didn't seem particularly prepared to be taking on interns but after a few weeks this was all sorted.
There was plenty of opportunities to learn, these included speaker series from the CEO and other very senior employees. Opportunities to go on training and development courses, visit other offices etc.
Company Parties/Events
JP Morgan is a company to work for if you want a career in technology. They are willing to invest in technology and invest in you. Only drawback is that Bournemouth feels very isolated from the financial hub of London.
The Culture
There was about 100 interns, most of which stayed in student halls in town. Also socialised with colleagues outside of work.
£1200 accommodation (university halls) ~£1000 living expenses for the 10 weeks.
Plenty of places in Bournemouth.
There are sports team organised by employees
