The Role
I really enjoyed my time with Rolls Royce. The team I was working in were really helpful and keen to help me develop my skills and knowledge.
I was given tasks that were of real benefit to the team and I received a lot of feedback on my work and what I had done well. I was included in all team meetings and discussions and was treated like a real team member, allowing me to get a really good insight into the project
I was well aware of the people I could contact for help and support. It was a really busy office and my line manager was extremely busy, but there was a number of people I could go to for guidance. I worked closely with one individual which meant I always had someone I could go to at any point and the support they provided was extremely useful
Initially, it was a little slow while my IT was being set-up and there was a fair amount of e-learning to be done and general familiarisation with the project before I could fully get going. But after the first couple weeks, it really picked up and I had a constant stream of work that I could be getting on with. My supervisor was very cautious about me not having much to do and ensured I always had something to work on, whether it was actual project work or reading up or some processes to help me complete some work later on.
Clear objectives were set out for me near the start of the project, one of which was to deliver an important presentation to the 1st line of management. Although a little daunting, it was really rewarding and felt like I had real responsibility for the project I was working on.
I came from a Physics background and had no experience of manufacture engineering. In the short period, I learnt huge amounts. I particularly developed my problem solving skills, which will be immensely useful for returning to my degree course.
The Company
It was a really good office to work in. Everyone was friendly and relaxed and easy to talk to if you needed to speak to someone outside your team. The team I worked with was great and everyone was up for a laugh. Despite feeling relaxed, there was still a strong emphasis on ensuring you got the work done
We had career advisors and were given clear guidance on what was expected over the course of the internship. The format was really good and allowed you to get involved in real projects, rather than just working with a group of other interns separate from the real office.
There were a number of courses I could have taken during the placement that would have been funded by Rolls Royce, but the best development came from working within the team, who were always happy to stop and talk to you even if they were really busy themselves.

Really appealing. During the internship, we were invited to dedicated days where we were able to meet with managers within the industry, find out a lot more about the industry and discuss the steps we could take after graduating.
The Culture
In Derby, a lot of the interns stayed in Student Halls over the Summer period so there was a lot of social events at the weekends incuding nights out in Derby and Nottingham. As all the interns are staying in the same place, it also makes it much easier to meet other interns outside of your office.
Student Halls worked out at about £14 a night including Bills and a decent internet connection. Derby wasn't too expensive for a night out and Nottingham was only a £5 return ticket away.
Derby was a decent night out and had multiple places you could go. For £5, you can get the nightbus to Nottingham which has a larger range of clubs and buses run til about 4am to get you home.
During the welcome event, there were representatives there form the rugby team etc. for you to sign up to and there was a dedicated society for interns where they'd organise different events such as nights out and sky-diving
