The Role
I did a six week internship at the London Finsbury Square Office, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it! I had a great insight of the working environment, as well as plenty of opportunities to network with other people from different departments.
Whenever I have finished a piece of work for a colleague, they would give me feedbacks on how well I did/what I could improve next time.
Everyone that I worked with was very approachable and friendly - directors, managers, associates and people from the other departments. I really appreciate how everyone was happy to help me out and explain things that I wasn't familiar with, especially on my first week.
Throughout the six weeks, I always had something to work on (which I loved). However, at times, I found myself asking for more work (or if anyone needed any help).
I was given alot of responsibilities during my internship, i.e. drafting an e-mail to the clients, preparing tax computations and working papers, research and even scanning documents. I also volunteered to become part of the Intern Takeover for the Spilling The Beans website, which allowed me to share my internship experience and network with the other interns.
I had learned so much about the basics in tax and how the theories I learned from my degree are applied in practice, which improved my understanding of the financial services even more. Also had my first insight of working in a professional environment.
The Company
The environment was professional, yet very friendly and warm at the same time.
I had an array of experience of different activities - fundraising challenge, training days in Bradenham, away days and the actual work experience.
As I had to deliver a presentation at the end of my internship, they sent me to a two day training course in Bradenham - which really improved my communication skills.
Company Parties/Events
As this is my first professional experience, I think it is a great platform to start off my career in the financial services.
The Culture
I made so many great friends during my internship, and until now, am still in touch with them!
For a student, London is an expensive city to live in. Transport and food costs are high, but still manageable.
After work, my team would invite me out for drinks and other events, such as watch a cricket game. Great way to unwind after a long day at work!
I volunteered to be part of the Intern Takeover on the Spilling the Beans website. I had the opportunity to share my internship experience by writing blogs and making status updates on the internal social networking page called 'Jam'.
