The Role
I am currently enjoying my placement a lot more than I first expected. I am given plenty of work each day, and involves communicating with various members of staff. The work generally varies from day to day, which I see as a goo thing. This lets me gather an insight into the various areas of the plant which I work at.
I do feel well valued by my colleagues. I feel I can talk to any member of staff in my office. I also find that all the people in my office can, and have approached me at some stage to give a hand with what they are working on/ give me a job to work on.
One of the main advantages that I have found from my placement so far is the guidance and support that I receive on a daily basis. I have yet to find a member of staff at this plant who is not willing to answer any questions that I may have. I feel encouraged to ask questions which ensure that the job I am working on is carried out correctly. The support I receive from colleagues is top class.
This is something I found very important with a placement. I am happy to say that I have been given a sufficient and reasonable workload. If I ever do find myself on top of the work that I have been given, I will ask around my office to see if anyone needs a hand or would have a job needing done. This always yields results and I will be given work to keep me going with a good work balance.
At first as expected I was given relatively straightforward jobs which did not hold as much responsibility. This was good as it provided a learning period where I would get my bearings of the workplace and the type of work that needed carried out. Now as I am a few more months into my placement I have seen the responsibility on the jobs which I am given has increased. Again this is good as I am more prepared for the step up in responsibility. Overall I am satisfied with the responsibility that I am given.
The time I have spent so far on placement with Schlumberger will prove invaluable for what the future holds. I have had to adjust to a 5 days a week work schedule which in itself is brilliant experience. The day to day work which I am involved in again involves a lot of valued learning which I will carry with me into the future.
The Company
My office varies in terms of how busy it can be. The machine operators can be in and out at any time with questions. At times the office is packed and at other times depending on what my colleagues are working on it can be quiet. Which I wouldn't class a bad thing. My work as well as others in my office varies between computer work where I will be at the desk and more active work where I will be around the shop floor communicating with others. So a varied atmosphere in the office depending on when you are there.
My placement is generally well structured. I have my own laptop/desk/headset/office supplies. My manager is always contactable which is important. If I don't have to much work at any given time I know who to ask for more work. I have my own PPE and locker for storing it in. I also have my own access card which allows me to access all parts of the plant. I am happy with how my placement is structured.
The first week of my placement was spent in training. Alot of health and safety and computer data safety was involved. There is also additional on-line training which can be accessed through the companies internal website, I have completed any of the additional training test which I find helpful with my job. Myself and the other interns from this plant were invited to and participated in a "Schlumberger Interns Day" which was based in London. All the travel and accommodation costs for that weekend were covered by Schlumberger. On this day a lot of very useful information was given to us, along with team building exercises. The day was finished by free admission to "The Shard" in London and dinner in the evening. Overall a very good weekend which was well organised. Schlumberger appear to be willing to invest in training and development of the interns which they take on.

Very appealing, I would be delighted if I was to get a fulltime Job with Schlumberger in the future.
The Culture
As mentioned before, the interns day in August was attended by myself and the other interns from the plant. This was great from as it helped get to know the other interns better. I was also out for lunch with the members of my office towards the end of August. And have my name down for the company Christmas do, which I am looking forward too. I eat in the company canteen everyday, this proves to be a very social place as you get talking to others from all around the plant.
I live from home and travel to work by car. The cost of living is very reasonable. Prices in the nearest city (which is about 7 miles away from the plant) are around what I would consider the average, not too dear, not overly cheap.
The nearest city (7 miles away) has a good night life. This is also where I went to UNI and enjoy the night-life. Lots of pubs and numerous nightclubs.
I have been given opportunities to go paint balling with the office staff, Unfortunately I had other plans or else I definitely would have gone. There is 5 aside football weekly. I play football for a local team. There are plenty of activities to get involved in, in and around the city.
