The Role
It was a really fulfilling year in which I met loads of good people and learned valuable chemistry and life experience along the way.
I felt as though my opinions were valued and I really did feel like one of the team, in the end.
My supervisor was a great guy who always made sure that I was happy with what I was doing and that I never struggled alone.
I was busy but I like to be kept busy and any time it was a slow day I would always ask if anyone needed help with something. You're never going to be bored on placement.
I had responsibility over my own synthesis and I was able to chip in on group meetings but as is expected you aren't left to do what you want.
My placement year is the most valued part of my degree. I learned so much that I would never have learned in class and made chemistry really come together.
The Company
Fun and enthusiastic.
My supervisor was very aware of the other work I had to produce for uni and was very helpful in helping me schedule the work.
If there was a department you wanted to find out about or visit, it was easy to do so.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Subsidised Canteen
Financial Bonus
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
The R&D side of things is very competitive and they don't hire as many organic chemists as they used to, so I'm not hopeful.
The Culture
The friends I made on placement are great people and it was really sad when everyone went back to finish studying.
It was reasonable for south east England
Poor.
There was Orange Day which is a day that you're paid by GSK to do charitable work. Apart from that though, there wasn't anything.
