    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was a brilliant year, with many experiences and I have made some true friends from it.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All my colleagues treated me as not just another person in the office/lab but also as a friend. They appreciated the work I did and were also very supportive.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support was always available not just from my supervisor but also from other colleagues. I found it easy to approach people on things that I was unsure of and there was always understanding that as a student I would not know everything about the work.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was a good balance between work time and time for myself. Rarely was I bored. Sometimes I was very busy but that made the placement more enjoyable and prepared me for the real world of work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given the responsibility to work independently were possible, However, with some aspects of the job supervision was required.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Not only did I develop specific scientific skills which will help me in my future career, I have also strengthened my transferable skills.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone in the office was professional, however that did not make the office a fun place to work.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Everything was thought of, from seminars to health and safety. No faults at all!

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was nothing the firm wasn't happy to help with. I was allowed to experience other departments to gain a greater depth of knowledge.

  • I would happily work with this organisation. Overall they treat their employees well and there is a great scientific buzz.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • All the students got on well and there was a constant social atmosphere with many social activities going on throughout the year.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost was average - however it would have been nicer if the food in the canteen was slightly cheaper.

  • Quite a nice selection of pubs - however they all closed early!
