The Role
I enjoyed the internship thoroughly and thought that it was very well organised overall. The staff were friendly, the work load was manageable and interns were treated more like future employees rather than temporary help.
Senior staff took interns out for drinks/dinners on a number of occasions and there was a strong emphasis on becoming part of the team and firm's culture. Being proactive and asking questions was treated positively most of the time and very rarely did anyone hesitate to explain concepts that may have seemed simple to them.
Support and guidance was given most of the time. The set up of having a "mentor" (a Director someone more senior) and a "desk buddy" (an Associate), in addition to a staffer for work provided a strong framework for guidance and management.
Some days there was too little work due to newly introduced regulations, but on others the balance was perfect. Overall there seemed to be a strong sense of attention paid to not giving too much work and emphasising the learning experience.
Not much responsibility was given in the beginning, but as the internship progressed, I and the other interns were assigned to deal teams and included in numerous projects. Overall the amount of responsibility seemed to strike a good balance between learning what it is really like on the job, whilst not stressing out interns too much.
Hard skills such as with MS Office, in addition to soft skills like networking, will stay with me forever.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was relatively intense, but never such that people were fully occupied with their work; people were very approachable and friendly.
The structure of the internship was very good overall. Everything from events to being included on projects was solid. The only problems that arose were with some aspects of staffing, which was slightly sporadic at times.
From being given my own Bloomberg Terminal for the whole summer and receiving excellent training, I could not have asked for more.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
I received a return offer for my division.
The Culture
Yes, all interns were friendly and there was no vicious competition among summer interns.
London is expensive, however the good salary that was paid helped cover these costs.
Fantastic.
Yes, all weekends were free.
