The Role
I throughly enjoy my internship at EY. I got the opportunity to work on a project with other interns, which we presented to Partners across EY, and to gain experience across different areas of Tax services. I completed my internship as a Direct Tax intern in the Manchester office, spending 2 weeks in Business Tax services and 1 week in the following areas: International tax services, Real estate tax and Transaction tax. I felt a part of the teams I worked in and enjoyed the work I did and the people I worked with!
I did feel valued by my colleagues, although it is obviously difficult given I had no experience in tax services before and needed things explaining to me. I did feel very much part of the teams I worked within though.
At the beginning of my internship I was assigned a line manager and a buddy. My line manager and I set out goals of what I wanted to achieve over the internship and what skills I wanted to develop. Through my internship, we had catch ups to see what I've been doing, what I've like and disliked, if I have any questions on anything and how I am developing the skills I said I wanted to really develop. My buddy was more an informal method of support as I went to him for questions that I might feel stupid asking someone more senior. My buddy was a 2nd year tax graduate. Overall I couldn't have asked for more support over my internship!
I worked pretty much 9-5.30 with 45 minutes lunch break and no work done at home. Tax seems to be busy but their deadlines are often at the year end meaning that the work can be spread out through out the year. Tax seems to be more 9-5 type of job, being focusing in the office, rather than mainly visiting client sites (like it is in Audit or Advisory/Consulting.) There is a strong work to life balance in the tax team in EY.
I was given responsibility for writing engagement letters, researching changes in tax laws for clients and sorting out the appropriate paper work for it. It was difficult for the level of responsibility, given I had no experience knowledge or qualifications in tax, but a project me and other interns were involved was of a high level of responsibility.
I study Economics so it didn't really assist me in my degree but it helped me develop my commerical awareness and the type of environment it is like to work in one of the big 4. I would definitely recommend to others!
The Company
Relatively quiet as everyone was working but it was friendly.
Very well organised. 1 week induction in London before the internship and a black tie event in the City at the end of the internship. There were projects that we worked on and the whole office knew we were there so that helped us to get involved.
I would say EY does invest in it's people, but it's obviously very hard for just a 6 week placement to get proper training and development.

Very, I've accepted a graduate offer from them.
The Culture
Yes although we all lived far away so there was many opportunities to meet after work for drinks or whatever.
Manchester is a lot cheaper than London and the nightlife in Manchester is class!
Great, I usually go out in Manchester.
Yes, there were football and netball team that ran after work.
