The Role
Periods initially where no real work was given but learnt a lot from the client work in the later weeks. Learnt a lot about the consulting industry
Depends a lot on the team you're allocated to - the work isn't just given for the sake of it so it is valued.
Counsellor (which everyone is allocated) was really helpful, especially in getting me experience in the areas I wanted to look at, and spent a lot more time communicating with me than he had to. Supervisors were willing to give good 'feedback' which we were required to collect over the six weeks.
Some days no work was given but there was a lot of online training etc available. I never left later than six even when the teams I was with were staying late.
You can't expect to be running the show on a six week internship. I was given enough responsibility to add to the client work that was being done however.
Not so much with degree studies or technical work, but it was genuinely useful to learn more about the consulting industry as well as the industries of the clients and getting an understanding of people's roles etc. Because of the varied nature of the work, I think it would be a beneficial area to gain exposure do regardless of whether you're certain about the career you want.
The Company
Much more relaxed at EY's offices as opposed to when teams are based with the clients as to be expected. It felt like people were approachable if I had any issues.
The induction days were well organised. Initially I wasn't allocated to a team which didn't give me the best start. and for the first few days at the office I wasn't sure about what exactly I should be doing. Fortunately I was able to sort this out with my counsellor
The impression I was given was that the firm definitely invests a lot on the graduate programme in terms of formal training. In terms of the internship, a lot of emphasis was put on 'feedback' and so you rely on the senior people you work with in terms of how good this is.
Flexi Time
National Travel
Received a job offer. Can not wait to join next year.
The Culture
There was in the first week as there were organised social events as part of the induction. In terms of day to day, I did not see much of the other interns as there were only a small number based in the area I interned in
Cost of living was especially bad for me as I struggled to find accommodation (I think this was a problem as the internship was relatively late in the Summer). I found restaurants etc. were not cheap but not as expensive as I was expecting
Didn't really experience it
Not particularly - there were a lot of networks for 'minority groups' which didn't apply to me. More the case if you join as a full time employee
