The Role
The summer internship within Barclays was extremely challenging and therefore rewarding. The objectives set were meaningful, appropriate. They allowed me to develop various skills, extend my knowledge of financial markets, the banking industry and Barclays as whole while making an impact and contributing to the success of the team.
On the beginning of the summer internship, I felt I was an intern. As the days passed, I felt I was a real valued employee within the team. The team members did not hesitate to entrust me with some more challenging tasks throughout the internship. Team social events like dinners, BBQ, drinks, bowling, football were great and helped me to improve my relationships with the members.
On the first week of the summer internship, my line manager and I set up and agreed on specific and detailed objectives to be evaluate against. I then had weekly one-to'one with my manager to check on progres, make sure I felt confortable in meeting my objectives and within the team. I also had proper mid-term and final reviews. Finally I was provided with appropriate materials ahead and throughout the programme.
Extremely busy which is exactly what I was looking for before joining. the tasks were various which allowed me to have a broader understanding of what the team was doing and of Barclays as a whole.
I was really "running the show". From week 2 I had to lead phone calls dealing with the Auditors, Front Office and tax employees. I was responsible for the statutory accounts of certain entities and had to make presentations to senior management.
I was done with Uni before starting the internship but I am now still working for Barclays and the skills I developed during my internship (especially organisation, communications, presentations and excel skills) help me to perform at a high level in my current new team.
The Company
We were all extremely busy which sometimes lead to tensions but those tensions were positive and allowed us to perform at a higher level. When the objectives were reached and the job nicely done we all felt a great degree of satisfaction and celebrations were often taking place.
Great induction/training week which included an excel training, a "financial concept training and a "professional skills training" which helped me to be better in my role. However, having performed a Msc in Finance, the "financial concepts" training was a bit useless for me although I understant it was very relevant for others.
Highly. Relevant trainings (as discussed above) and a lot of speakers series with senior management who were sharing their experiences and were opened for questions. The online trainings before joining were very relevant.

Company Parties/Events
Absolutly fantastic, I got 3 offers at the end of the summer internship: one related to the internship I performed in Finance (London) + Two in front office roles as I was dealing with front office when I was in Finance (one in London and one in Luxembourg)
The Culture
Great events for all the interns: BBQ, Sport day and end of internship party. The event allowed us to meet interns from all areas of the banks which was great to share experience and background.
I was based in London and hence it was quite expensive. However the Company was very supportive as all inters had a relocation bonus and were paid the travel expenses to and from London which was greatly appreciated.
Exceptional nightlife in London which I really appreciate as it is not the case in my hometown.
Yes as mentioned in other questions: BBQ, Bowling, Football, Sport Day, Karaoke, end of internship party end other social events were organised.
