The Role
I enjoyed to work itself - particularly because I was given the opportunity to make a tangible difference to the company. I worked at one of their smaller sites and while there are many students at Derby, my site (Hucknall) is in an extremely quiet area.
There was a good working environmant and I generally felt well valued by the team.
It is fair to say that they expected me to 'get on with the job'. I received fairly little guidance but it was there if I asked for it.
Workload can vary between departments but I would often be extremely busy. I prefer to work under a bit of pressure so this suited me well. Generally, there was a good mix of busy weeks and quiter ones.
I was treated, in many ways, like just another member of the team and was expected to perform as such. I was given a large responsibility and felt valued because of it.
My time management and project management skills have definitely improved. The placement also gives a good insight into working methods and general practices used in industry
The Company
My office was quite relaxed and while people worked hard, we also had fun.
While the interview process was excellently organised, as I started late, there were a few issues at the start of my placement that took a while to resolve. Generally, most people found organisation to be quite good.
Being a summer placement, their level of investment was quite low. However, the company invests a lot into longer term employees.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
The locations aren't ideal for me but generally, as a company, it would be quite good to work for.
The Culture
There are many placement students from various backgrounds. The social scene in the company is generally good but working at a smaller site like I did can get quite dull.
Both housing and soocialising came at an average price.
Hucknall doesn't have much nightlife. Derby and Nottingham are, however, very close by.
There were limited options but I was generally very busy.
