The Role
The placement was good - I was challenged to complete good quality work and I feel I stretched myself whilst appreciating the finer detail of what I was doing, and how it tied in with the wider purposes of the work.
My colleagues were very helpful, kind and polite with me. They did not treat me like an intern or brief placement student in any way, Instead I felt included and that the work I was completing was of great value to the team and the firm.
I was given the autonomy to complete my work independently and although the work was challenging, with the support of my managers I felt the work was manageable, yet of a good quality, Any questions I had were answered immediately and I felt supported.
The placement was well structured and as such I was busy throughout my placement. The work I was given was sufficient to fill each day I worked during the placement - there was no down time or points when I was asking for tasks.
I was given a large amount of responsibility, I had four key work areas to complete and I was given notice of this from day one, so I could manage my own workload effectively and with an understanding of how what I was doing at any given point tied in with the next task
I am studying sociology. As such the finance focused work at Deloitte was not relevant to my course, However in another regard I noticed teamworking and people management skills that ties in with some of my course units.
The Company
As expected the atmosphere was business like and professional. I was impressed there was a diverse mix of people working at the firm, I was not the only female by any means and the firm seemed to be a place that would support people like myself and grow into a career in finance
I have no qualms over how the placement was organised as there was always work for me to do, and I always had contacts who I could reach out to. These were my manager, a buddy friend who was there for small problems, and really anyone who I was working with at that time.
During the placement I was given full instruction before I started working on a particular area and there were also I understand courses I could sign up to and develop skills further. There was nothing so technical during my placement that required detailed tuition, other than a general risk awareness.

I will look into wider departments before deciding whether to apply to my placement area or another department. I would like to return for a further placement but having asked about this I believe it is not possible. I am considering all options.
The Culture
There was a great social scheme, I really enjoyed linking in with the wider group during the first week and at the final days of my placement, at two centrally organised events - one was a drinks event and the other was a meal in central London. We could network with staff and colleagues at both.
The cost of living was quite expensive for a student
I didn't engage in much of the nightclubs.
I cannot easily comment here as I did not ask nor was told of wider opportunities to do things at the firm outside of the day to day job. I don't know if there are many hours left after work to engage anyhow. I understand there is a gym however.
