The Role
I really enjoyed the 9 weeks I spent in the Investment Banking Division in my internship. The internship was a pooled internship, so I got to experience many different desks, involving coverage, product and industry teams which meant I got a very varied experience out of the internship.
Those who worked in the division were very helpful and willing to give you support, advice, and guidance to the tasks you were assigned. It was extremely helpful because many of the things i did on the internship I was doing, was for the first time. They were very supportive throughout. I learnt a lot during the experience and they valued us being there. They wanted us to get as much out of the experience as we could. I also enjoyed working with the other interns.
A lot of support, there was a great development support team behind each intern. A buddy, mentor, development officer and staffer for each intern which meant there was someone you could go to for any reason and for particular questions that you had. You could also approach them whenever you wanted to.
There were busy periods and less busy periods. But I got a range of work, throughout the internship. It taught me to prioritise, and manage my workload appropriately.
I was involved in various projects, the work has a lot of responsibility tied to it as soon as you start. I found that towards the end of the internship I had gained more responsibility, especially as I had a greater idea of how the system worked.
Greater ability to communicate with seniors, better work focus and organisation skills. The skills that I developed from the week of training and throughout the internship, of approaching a project, using excel, etc will help me past my internship and once I start the job.
The Company
There was a great balance of professionalism and community in the office. The teams were great, everyone in the teams were willing to give advice and help which was very much appreciated. There were team drinks which allowed you to network and get to know everyone better.
Very well organised, there were events across the bank for the interns as well as divisional events. There were many opportunities to network with senior bankers in dinners, boardroom Q&A sessions. They also had great sessions for women to hear from a senior female banker which was inspiring. The structure of the internship was well planned too, with carefully planned week structures.
I felt as if the company invested a lot of time in me, there were weekly catch ups with my staffer and buddy etc, where I was able to allay questions I had. I was also given a wide range of tasks, to give me as great an exposure to the work done in IBD as possible.
