The Role
I was put into a group that was going through some difficult times. Had it been known in advance what would happen, they would not have taken on an intern at this time. However, I made the most of it and enjoyed it enough that I wanted to come back!
I did feel really valued by my colleagues. They were always telling me they were going to miss having me around. It felt nice to be treated not just as an intern, but as a valued colleague.
Considering I was being managed out of another country, in a team that had no direct manager, I would say a pretty great job was done. I had mostly weekly meetings with my manager.
Sometimes I was left to find work for myself. Other times I was so busy that I barely had time to eat at my desk. Just depended. I was never left feeling bored though!
I was given a surprising amount of access to some systems. I was definitely given a lot of responsibility, much more than I would have expected for an intern.
In this regard, the skills I gained will not help me tremendously. I have gained experience using certain software packages that I would not have gained otherwise. However it is likely this experience will only be useful if I returned to a very specific role within the company. Getting to work in a team was a nice experience though, the teamwork skills I gained - alongside the general skill of communicating with a global team - will help me going forward.
The Company
It was never dull. There were some days we came into the office and had some major issues to deal with that persisted throughout the day and it was hectic.
Overall it was very well organised. From application (and even before then) we had lots of contact from JP. It was great.
They definitely tried. We had a series of talks, broadcast globally, from all sorts of people within the firm. We also had a Q&A with senior staff in our building. Everything was themed about leadership mainly.

The Culture
There was always someone to eat lunch with. Can't comment much on the after hours scene.
As a native to the area, I can say the cost is very fair. Surrounded by lots of great places to eat, whether you are into Italian, Mexican, fast food etc
Can't really comment on this. I know, from living here in the area already, that nobody ever complains about a lack of nightlife so it must be pretty decent.
We had a day spent volunteering to help a local garden out. Outside of the internship there is also the Code for Good challenge which many of the interns attended.
