The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the placement. Everyone was very helpful, I gained a real insight into what a first year graduate would do when joining the firm, and I got to carry out real tasks with appropriate training and coaching.
All colleagues on various audit teams that I worked with, including a range of different employee levels, were friendly, helpful, and happy to help me whenever I asked. I was often told how much of a help I had been in contributing towards the team's efforts.
All interns are assigned a 'People Manager' who met with me regularly and explained feedback about how I had been doing. All team leaders when out at clients were very helpful in coaching me through any task that I had been assigned, and after each client job was completed, I submitted my goals and thoughts on how I had performed, and the team leader responded with their thoughts and any development points for me to view and act upon.
I was assigned tasks on every client job I was part of and was given the freedom to work through those, and also help out where I was needed. Any times where I found there was not a lot for me to do, I worked on the Intern Project we had been set, whereby we had to submit a report and prepare for a presentation. There was also a checklist of suggested actions to take when I had a chance, that meant I got more of an insight into the company (for example, read newsletter, set up answering machine and so on).
I was assigned tasks in every client job I attended and was left to get on with them, asking any questions as I went along.
Studying auditing, it was great to get an insight into the real-life procedures, as opposed to simply theory. I received three full days training in London, as well as continuous coaching on the job for different tasks. I improved my Excel skills, as well as team-work, communication, presentation and numeracy skills to name a few. Gaining experience of working as a first year graduate would in the firm means I know what to expect when I go into employment after university.
The Company
Everyone is very busy, however it was easy to speak to people, or ask for help when needed. I was also invited along to a few out-of-work activities.
It is very well organised, as is a national programme. There was 3 set days of training in London, whereby there was timetables for everyone to follow. Afterwards, I was assigned to different client jobs in advance.
Training in London for 3 days for all interns around the UK, and constant coaching when on the job.
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
I have been offered a job which I accepted on the final day of my placement.
The Culture
There was a couple of nights out I was invited to that many colleagues went to, as well as taking part in a local companies competition ('Corporate Decathlon') and different sports to get involved in.
Aberdeen isn't particularly cheap but is cheaper than larger cities such as Edinburgh or London.
There are numerous pubs and clubs to go to, and a local bar that colleagues went to when together.
There is numerous sports activities available to get involved in, and more available in and around Aberdeen.
