The Role
It gave a good insight into the power transmission network field. The work was enjoyable, although I felt it could have been more challenging at times.
The team was very welcoming and always approachable; they were more than happy to pass on their knowledge and often keen to understand your perspective and ideas. It was a good place to network.
The management would be available for support and guidance when necessary; but at the same time they would ensure that we had the freedom to take the projects in our own direction.
I felt there could have been more challenging work to do on a daily basis.
Given the time limit of our placement, it was understandable to not be given a project with a lot of responsibility. However our project did have a tangible outcome and we were always motivated to work , knowing that the outcome would add some value.
The knowledge gained helped me to understand many of the power course modules.
The Company
It was a good atmosphere. It felt a very friendly and comfortable place to work. I felt it was a good balance between getting the work done without putting yourself under stress.
The set up was good, as the human resources team always maintained communication throughout the process. I felt a lot more help could have been supplied with finding accomadation as the area is new to most of the students.
We were able to hold meetings with many of the top engineers/managers and get a really good understanding of the field. I felt a lot of knowledge was gained.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
I feel the company could provide a very prosperous career for engineers; particularly as there is a lot of change in prospect for the field in which they work in. During my time there, the company illustrated a good working environment and very progressive thinking.
The Culture
I enjoyed the social aspect of the placement as all the power academy scholars lived in one house. Although the night-life is not as lively as many of the surrounding cities; I made many good friends during my time on the placement.
This was the main negative from the placement. The socialising was cheap but finding suitable accommodation for a justified price was difficult.
The night life was average. Many pubs to go to but not many decent clubs that we could find.
There were many activities outside of work to get involved with including weekly football and table tennis.
