The Role
It was really fun. I got to meet lots of interesting and kind people. I also had lots of fun doing some of the work I was given, the training weekend we were sent on was particularly enjoyable.
Most of my colleagues made me feel valued when I was working on a client with them. They'd give me serious work that needed doing, and didn't just give tedious tasks like photocopying.
Not only was there direct support from both a line manager and a 'buddy,' but there was also opportunities to have webinars with members of the board of directors.
They certainly gave me interesting and insightful work to do. Once or twice work was a bit thin on the ground, but I think that was largely due to the time of year.
Plenty of responsibility was given to me, I was left with tasks that required me to sit down with whichever client we were working on and talk through certain aspects of their accounts. However, my work was always checked, which I found reassuring.
I wouldn't say it helped much with my degree. We did get training on presentation skills, which helps slightly at university, but not much. However, when it comes to life beyond Uni, it will be great having had the experience as I now know what working in an office is like, and feel I'm much better prepared for working life after university.
The Company
Everyone was friendly, and there seemed to be quite a relaxed atmosphere. But it was also very apparent that people were working hard at the same time.
I think it was very well set up. We were introduced to our offices. and the firm in general, very smoothly and quickly without it all being too overwhelming. The work was there for us from the start, and there was rarely a dull moment.
I feel Grant Thornton really did invest in there interns. We were sent on a two day training course, we got to talk to the directors via webcam and lots of work was put on for us. As I understand it, Grant Thornton is one of few places to aim at having all interns take on graduate positions, which means they try really hard to make you a fit for the firm.
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing, Grant Thornton have a very clear, established structure one can work their way up if they try hard enough.
The Culture
Most definitely, everyone in the office would have lunch together most days, and there were various events paid for by the firm that lots of colleagues would get involved with and enjoy.
It was an above average cost of living, but given it was near London that was no surprise. However, you were paid more than enough to get by an be able to enjoy a social life.
It's okay, given I grew up in the area I was already a bit bored of it, but as a new place it's okay.
Yes, they put on a competition for interns to try and raise money for charity, there was also a day at the races for those who wanted to attend. Plus, a couple of drinking social occasions.
