The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Met great people, had a lot of responsibility, as well as learning a lot about myself, the company, the industry and working life in general.
Felt greatly valued by colleagues. Meetings were very collaborative and a lot of the work I did was based on my knowledge and input.
Regular 1:1's with a variety of mentors. 2 formal check in's to check on progress throughout the year. Manager's offered help without me asking a lot of the time.
Varied slightly throughout the year but busy in general. Some days I would work long hours to get the work done - happy to do so as I enjoyed the projects.
More than I ever thought I'd get! Involved in many projects and had ownership of a portfolio of contracts. Attended customer meetings on my own with 3 months; scary but a very rewarding experience.
I have already seen improvements in my organisation and time management, helped by new tools/software I used in my year at Microsoft, as well well as improved mindset. I believe the experience and skills I have gained from this year will set me in great stride for my future career.
The Company
Some areas of the office were quiet as employees are out on customer site often. However, the atmosphere was brilliant - often sharing a joke, or discussing interesting topics, whilst obviously all getting on with our work!
The internship was well structured but left enough room to adjust to fit my needs/wants from the year. Very well organised.
I have managed to gain industry level qualifications as well as attending great training days. I also had a variety of mentors to help me with my personal development.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
There are many routes back into Microsoft and definitely options I am considering at the moment.
The Culture
Brilliant - 100+ interns, made some great friends!
I was 'lucky' enough to have my parents live fairly near by, but the cost of living/socialising can be fairly expensive in Reading.
Only went out in Reading a few times but had a good laugh. Cubed put on good nights.
Loads. I played football 5-a-side with the graduates once a well. Took part in morale events and charity activities throughout the year.
