The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement so far. The work is challenging and the level of responsibility is great for helping me develop my own skill set.
Feedback on work is common and guidence is easily available if you are struggling with a task.
My manager works all over the country but we schedule regular video calls to ensure I am comfortable with my workload and any ideas or suggestions I have can be taken in to consideration.
There is a lot of work but that brings a lot of opportunities with it. There is no pressure to work over time but that is where you are able to acheive things above and beyond your role.
At first I was guided through areas that I did not feel comfortable with, but as I became more comfortable in my role I was given as much responsibility as anyone else in the team. In the first few months I shadowed other members of the team as they organised and hosted meetings with some of our top partners, now I am left to do that myself.
Microsoft has a small library and provides regular training courses for anyone who wants to develop skills in certain areas. I will use the skills and training I have developed at Microsoft throughout my career.
The Company
Friendly. Everyone grabs lunch together and people are happy to help you if you dont understand something.
From the first day we were given several activities to meet other interns and organise housing. We the are also given ways to stay in touch (including an intern facebook group)and recieve regular emails about various opportunities available to the intern community
The salary at Microsoft is not as high as some other internships but the value of free training courses available while working at Microsoft (which can be taken continually until you pass)and the overall exposure to real work makes the internship as beneficial at this stage in my career than any of the alternatives
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
There are a lot of opportunities for gaining experience in the areas you feel passionate about which means in the long term you can focus on what you want to do. We are also given details about the graduate scheme, what can be expected and how we can improve our chances of getting on it. I will definately apply for the MACH Scheme.
The Culture
There is a Christmas Party for the interns and everyone tends to have a house with other interns so it becomes like a community.
From student means to working full time at Microsoft I found that I spent a lot more but as you get a salary it is manageable.
There are a few different types of bars and clubs from student areas to more high end places depending on how much you want to spend.
There are lots of social clubs such as badminton, tennis, football and so on.
