    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Very hands on mentoring by my full-time colleagues. With tax being such a specialized subject matter, it was great to have continuous input by people with the experience to make better sense of some difficult subjects.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Great opportunity to take on as much work as one feels they can do. A few times where projects that once seemed so urgent get lost in the mix, but that's really expected with any job. Managers are very willing to give more complex work when you've proved yourself deserving of it.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The best opportunity I've ever had to work so closely with senior people. It would not have been as nearly hands-on at a law or accounting firm. This is really what set the placement apart from similar opportunities.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Typically a 9 to 10-hour day with a break for lunch. Time for breaks but generally working the entire day. Very random late-ish nights but always out by 8:30pm by the very latest and never forced to work on the weekend.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • This will vary by person but generally you can take on as much as you would like, while bearing in mind you have to prove yourself on initial projects before graduating to more complex things. I had some major, difficult assignments. These took up a lot of time. So long as I kept my managers in the loop, I was not only given responsibility but the freedom to work on my own.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The ability to read the law. Better excel and financial statement analysis skills. My writing and interviewing improved. Lots of professional networking events as well. A great placement.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very collegial. Most of the colleagues worked in the same open-area. Ability to ask for help all around.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Much less organized than a placement with an accounting firm or law firm. The real work being done by the managers dictates your projects and their pace. Never felt so disorganized that I couldn't reach out to someone but other times you would think you had finished a project and the objective would then morph entirely. For training, you are doing the same exact stuff as the full-time senior employees.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was given ample time with senior people, which I feel is the best investment possible.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Car

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    National Travel

    International Travel

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    Healthcare from home

    Healthcare/Dental

    Travel loan

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It's a specialized position so this comes down the line but it seems possible.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Very limited. I sometimes at lunch with people my age but I think the company could have done more to organize a placement lunch at the beginning of the placements to foster a better social network for people in a new city.

    1/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is crazy expensive! Tough place to be an intern! When it's payday though (or you've thoughtfully saved-up), there's very few places as fun!

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • A couple good pubs around and not a far transit ride from hipper areas.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, I coached some lacrosse teams all over Europe and made a lot of new friends around the city. You're given the freedom (encouraged even!) to have a life outside of work.

    4/5
