The Role
as a full-time employee and subject to real responsibility
Felt hugely valued whilst on placement. If I didn't perform to standard the whole team suffered.
Given a good amount of support whilst on placement and attended monthly reviews with my manager, as is standard for every employee. Workload/opportunities/concerns could easily be voiced.
Busy every day and end of quarters/end of FY particularly. I had my own responsibilities to manage and complete and it was up to me how I dealt with them. The more comfortable I became, the quicker I performed tasks and I was then given other responsibilities to fulfill. .
Huge responsibility given considering I was only an intern. I was in charge of point of sale transactions. If I did not process and deal with these successfully, customers would not receive the goods/services they had paid for; I felt a large sense of responsibility and trust associated with this given the value of the goods I was dealing with.
If nothing else I now have a better idea of what I want to do post-graduation. I have learnt how to exist in a corporate environment and I now have the skills required to develop further and perform to standard in a full-time job.
The Company
Good atmosphere within the office and my team. Everyone is very friendly as always within GE and plenty of drinks after work and corporate events etc.
It was up to my manager to organise my internship and delegate responsibilities to me. I was given a good amount of work and did not simply do all of the jobs no one else wanted to do. My internship was tailored around my ability and willingness.
I attended training in Brussels to implement a new computer system which only came into use after I left. Treated as if I was in the business permanently and wasn't held back due to my role as an intern or the fact i was only there for a year.

There is a 'Leadership Program' within GE which requires graduates who have a few years experience. Given my years work with the company I would like to think I am a much more favorable candidate. GE spans a vast array of industries so I feel that i am able to go back to the company and engage in almost whatever industry I please.
The Culture
Yes. Within Healthcare and the location we were all based there were 60 interns across the three sites. There was an intern social committee and we went on nights out/days out almost every weekend. This was also useful for accommodation as I also lived with other interns at the company.
I lived about half an hour away from work and the cost of living there was relatively cheap which was great. the area I worked in was a bit more affluent, but given there was a subsidised canteen at my site along with the competitive intern salary, this wasn't an issue.
Good night life in and around where I lived and worked, although was slightly pricey in areas - not quite as good as at University.
Yes, there were football and sports teams to get involved with.
