The Role
A high bar has been set for interns at the company, and alot is expected from the start, but very rewarding at times.
Interns were highly valued by the company, and all the staff on every level were very friendly. I got on very well with everyone in my office.
Support was given whenever required but interns were expected to only ever have to ask a question once.
The first 6 months were much busier for me than the last 6 months. This was proof that we were improving systems in the department, however, somedays i would have not alot to do so would be expected to go and find work.
If management think you are responsible enough to handle something they will let you run with it. When my mentor was off sick for a while i was in charge of repair development for the engine i worked on. This was a huge responsibility and i'm proud to say that i succeeded in stepping up to the challenge.
Although there are obviously things that you will learn just for the job, and forget once you leave, i have found that i have learnt certain skills and lessons which are already helping me in my final year now. For example, i can manage my time alot better, am better motivated, and pay more attention in lectures. I know what hard work feels like so i relish the time available to me now.
The Company
There was great office humour and it was a really friendly environment. Also, on the shopfloor, everyone always loved to have a joke. When the pressure was on though, the place worked like a well oiled machine.
Since there are about 30 interns at the company and the scheme has been running for a number of years now there has been alot of time spent on developing the quality of work placements at the company. It did vary though from intern to intern what they actually did day-to-day and how much they got out of/enjoyed the placement.
It was up to each intern to manage their own development, although there were a couple training events for Six Sigma, Engine Manuals, and one session about how Engines work (to give the non-engineering interns more idea of how the engines work that the company overhaul).
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
I am more interested in pursuing a career in the armed forces, but i would still recommend GE to any graduate as a good company to work for.
The Culture
There were a few intern socials organised by the company, and some interns met up as a group to to activities together. One intern organised football after work on a Thursday which was popular with the male interns.
Cardiff is renowned for its cheap cost of living. lots to do and it wont break the bank.
Always loads going on in Cardiff.
There were a number of work do's over the year, and as mentioned previously, the interns often met up for activities.
