The Role
Fully enjoyed the retail work experience however the business side of it was not as good because i did not get shown much by the colleagues.
In the retail part they all made me feel very welcome and a member of their team! Loved them all. However in the business part, some of the staff weren't willing to help me learn about their side of banking.
Couldn't fault the managers/supervisors. Retail experience was brilliant and they made sure I got to see every role within retail. Business side were brilliant also, supportive and caring, they created a structure for me but it was the colleagues that let it down.
I would say 99% of my time at retail i was busy, where as in the business side I would say I was only busy 50% of the time.
I was given a lot of responsibility within the retail experience, served customers myself etc where as with the business side I had hardly any responsibility.
As I want to work in retail banking, this experience has helped me very much. I had a deeper insight of retail banking and by getting my hands dirty and doing the job myself by serving the customers it really did help me gain customer service skills and bank knowledge. I also learnt a lot of skills about other roles in retail banking by observing other colleagues doing their role.
The Company
10/10 for the retail experience. Colleagues made me feel wanted and there was always a happy and friendly atmosphere in the branch. 4/10 for the business experience. Supervisor/manager and some colleagues were friendly but I did not feel comfortable as there was always a pressured atmosphere in the room.
Brilliantly organised, I had the opportunity to do retail and business (which is what was planned) however some of the other interns did not so I feel very lucky even though I did not really enjoy the business side - it was great to be able to experience what it is like! I was always well informed by the person in charge of the internship of what was happening.
10/10 for retail, the manager helped me get interviews for jobs within in the branch and still is, great support from all the team there with regards to getting a job with them. 6/10 from business as the colleagues weren't really interested but the manager did offer to help me get experience in hsbc call centre if I was interested.
I would really love to get a job in hsbc retail branch, having an insight of it has made me want to work there even more.
The Culture
Everyone on the placement was super friendly and easily to get to know and get along with.
Had to pay for parking to get to my work place, which I don't really mind but it all added up and it was quite costly.
My retail branch was in the town so there were clubs and bars around the corner. Lovely thing when you have plans with work.
Not at the time but just before I started they had done lots of charity work which i would have loved to participated in and I would have been more than welcome.
