The Role
I really enjoyed the internship. Although all of the interns were split up to go to different branches the people I worked with on a day-to-day basis were lively and encouraging.
I did feel valued, I was taken into the management team and helped each manager with different pieces of work - at times it felt like I had alot on but it was great to feel like I was really making a difference.
I didn't see my line manager often throughout the process - luckily, however - I had a graduate working in my branch who became my 'manager-in-effect', it was brilliant to have her helping me because she had a good perspective of what I should be aiming to do whilst on the internship and offered me good advice about being a graduate at HSBC.
At the start of the internship I had alot of admin work to do to get myself set up on the HSBC systems. However, once this was completed I was given work to do by all of the managers which gave me a great view of the branch.
A great deal, at the end of my internship I was given complete control of a project helping with the assessment of staff, I was only given direction by my manager at the start of the task and then feedback at the end - this put quite a bit of pressure on me to do the right thing but it was brilliant to feel responsible of something.
I have learnt a great deal about time and people management - as well as alot about the internal functionings of HSBC and what it is like to be a 'professional'.
The Company
The branch was always in the public's eye, often people would be quite stressed or tense. However, the people were very nice.
The central organisation of the internship wasn't great. However, my graduate gave me a great plan for my internship and made sure I was constantly being pushed whilst on the programme to make the most of my time.
My managers asked me upon arrival what it was that I wanted to get out of my time on the internship. I told them a couple of areas that I felt I could develop and they made sure to help me with my development of these areas.
National Travel
The employment prospects are great, you can do almost anything at HSBC, however, the graduate scheme keeps being changed so I will wait until my final year to decide on if I want to do it.
The Culture
All of the interns kept in touch over the internship despite being apart, we had a really good time at the start and end of the internship when we all met up together.
I was at home, so great.
Nottingham! Pretty cheap and a good night out.
We had a few out-of-work meetings as well as badminton on monday nights.
