The Role
Enjoyable, although long hours as expected (I was in equity research). Was able to network with many people, sit on other desks and got to work on an independent project which could be used by the team in future publications
More and more as time went on and they understood my strengths/weaknesses. By the end they were willing to give me more responsibility, but it took time for this to happen
Was difficult at times as it was earnings season, but other than a few very busy days, the team were always willing to advise me on my project and show me what work they were doing
Varied by day - had the individual project to work on whenever I didn't have work from the team. Some days, especially during the earnings calendar, I was given a number of tasks
More than I expected - I had to update models, make notes during analyst meetings etc...
Very useful insight into what the financial sector involves, shows the importance of networking and social skills, improved my excel skills significantly
The Company
Quite calm other than during some particularly busy days in results season. Small teams (only 3 people on my desk inc. me) and you sit next to your team, which is beneficial as then they can show you what they're working on and answer any of your questions
Very well organised - 3 intern socials planned (start, middle and end), good training week with a number of useful sessions
Very good organisation to work for, well-known in the industry, very friendly people
The Culture
Was difficult to organise frequent meet-ups with interns given the long hours, but the UBS organised events were very good
High cost of socialising (being in London), expensive to live out somewhere close to the office
Many clubs in London (but expensive!)
No, all activities were during work-time. Other socials amongst interns had to be self-organised
