The Role
Overall I enjoyed my time with HSBC, however as with any company, there were aspects of the company I thought could have been better
I felt of more value during my placement in retail, where I was able to do work indepently and walk the floor on my own. I felt I was able to be more proactive. In commercial however, I had less autonomy and felt I was of less use.
My managers and supervisors were lovely. They were happy to guide me, but in branch they were very busy with their work and so worked more with my other peers. In commercial, my line manager was lovely and she helped me a lot, answering my questions and arranging things for me that would enrich my placement.
It varied on a daily basis. Some days I had very little to do and on others I was glad to sit down!
I felt that I was given some responsibility, especially regarding my own time management but because of the nature of the business, I felt I was limited because of being unable to access certain feature's of the computer system, meaning I could do very little independent work.
I felt I gained am insight into dealing with customers and to what working in the finance industry is like. I also improved upon skills such as minute taking in meetings.
The Company
I met some lovely people during my placement, who were welcoming and friendly. The office was quiet but very busy and at times I felt quite shy about introducing myself to some people. I also felt a little bit excluded as people didn't always quite understand my role and what my placement was about.
I felt that aspects of my placement were disorganized. As the placement was split into two parts- 3 weeks in retail and 3 weeks in commercial, I was disappointed to only find out the location of my second placement 3 days before I was due to start. It also took a while to be set up on the computer system so I was unable to start certain projects for a few day's.
As one of approximately thirty participants on my placement, I think that HSBC must have felt me to be a candidate they could invest in in the future. However, I don't know if I feel that I was 'invested in' during my six weeks with HSBC.
While a good company to work for, I do not think that I would necessarily work for them in the future, only because I realized that finance wasn't the area I wanted to work in.
