The Role
I enjoyed my placement. It wasn't very difficult work, but everyone was really nice.
Those who I was doing work for valued the help. I got the sense that others thought the internship place was a bit pointless, and valued my presence less.
No one really knew what I was meant to be doing. My supervisor gave me a lot of support, but also often wasn't sure what the aim of the programme was.
Really depended. It was on a scale of doing very little indeed to mediumly busy. I never felt particularly pushed.
Very little. I had the responsibility of filling my time, but that was more because I didn't get told to do anything - in regards to what I actually did, everything had to be checked and monitored.
Not really at all.
The Company
Worked over 3 offices. In general they were very welcoming, but they were unsure as to why I was there as my role hadn't been properly communicated to them. It was quite collegiate, but not particularly intense (in a negative way). I felt like most colleagues didn't really enjoy what they were doing.
It was well organised in areas. For example the charity days etc were well organised. However, the day-to-day work was poorly organised, with very little understanding from average employees about what my role was, and what I should be expected to do. Furthermore, the follow-up to the internship has been a complete mess (in terms of offers, or even in relation to submitting this review).
Very little investment was received. In fact, other than a couple of specific acronyms and processes that I picked up out of necessity, I really don't think I learnt anything over my placement.
Quite poor - the reason I turned down their offer. The career trajectory is quite confused (currently undergoing a re-haul) and the opportunities in the departments are, in my mind, quite limited.
The Culture
I think this depended a lot on where you were placed. For the Thames Valley, across which I was working, there wasn't much of a social scene. However, in London I know that it was much more social, purely because everyone was much closer.
Pretty low - I lived at home and commuted.
Didn't go out at all as everyone in the office was pretty old and I was the only intern.
There was. HSBC offered lots of initiatives to get involved with charity work, and mentorship opportunities. I attended 3 or 4 of these day long events and they were great.
