The Role
The work was incredibly interesting, relevant and to my level of understanding.
The project supervisors always put my work into context and how it would be used to support larger projects.
Project supervisors was always eager to provide their knowledge and support, however especially during the summer supervisors would be away on leave.
I always found work to be doing however I never felt under pressure which made me uncomfortable .
Considering the nature of the employer and time I was there for, I felt like I was given a significant amount of responsibility.
The position was extremely relevant to my degree, and feel like I learnt a vast amount in my 3 months at DSTL.
The Company
The office had a very comfortable atmosphere, flexi desk meant I was able to speak to range of different member of staff.
The placement was very well organised, DSTL put me in contact with other intern so we were able to organise a house even though they couldn't directly suggest property.
Considering I was only there for 3 month, I didn't have much formal training as such although they encouraged us to sit in on meeting and internal lecture to gauge how the whole company operated.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Senior staff within the department made sure to discuss the career ladder within DSTL and how we could progress with the company.
The Culture
Socialising with other interns was very easy. I managed to meet and socialise with almost all summer intern with the department (20+ students).
The cost of living in and around Portsmouth was very reasonable.
The nightlife in Portsmouth was mediocre, nightclub were poor however there were plenty of restaurants, and interesting bars and pubs.
There were plenty of sport even within DSTL as well as outside the company. There are plenty of sports faculties in Portsmouth, as well as loads of sport events (Watersports, British Military Fitness, Runs).
