The Role
John Lewis is an amazing company to work for. They are good for development and there are lots of benefits to the job!
I met some wonderful people working at John Lewis during my placement and still keep in touch with a lot of them. There is a real sense of community.
Different managers all had different styles some which would suit, some which wouldn't. The manager I had for the last 6 months of my placement however was amazing she was very supportive, friendly, approachable and pushed me to achieve my goals.
When I first started I was not very busy, by the end of my placement however I would be extremely busy on a daily basis and time management was key.
As time went on I was given more and more responsibility according to my performance. I was surprised as to the responsibilities I was given by the end of my placement such as managing my own partners but it was a great learning experience.
I developed so many skills, such a managing people, time management, prioritising, dealing with the public, sorting issues out efficiently and effectively and presentation skills. I know my placement year will be very value to my future employment.
The Company
Hectic at times but enjoyable.
There was a clear structure to my placement, however it was not clear who my manager was at the start.
I went on multiple training days and conferences, John Lewis are really good for development.
Subsidised Canteen
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
John Lewis are very good at moving people around in the business. A lot of people I had met had been there over 40 years and done multiple different jobs. They have graduates schemes also so the future employment prospects are good.
The Culture
As you are based in store on the retail scheme, each person is in a different store so you don't see the other industrial placement students often. However I did keep in touch with them all during the placement.
I worked in London so it was pretty expensive.
Good but expensive.
Yes they have lots of different societies, from sailing to football. There also have a few estates which you can stay at for a discounted price.
