The Role
I really enjoyed working at Pinewood Technologies based in Birmingham Business Park for my placement year as it gave me the opportunity to gain experience in an active business. I have returned back to Pinewood to embark onto Phase 2 of the Graduate Development Scheme as I had completed Phase 1 during my Placement Year.
At the end of my placement year, I felt valued as an active team member as I had become more experienced in my role and my Team Leader and team members acknowledged the contribution I had made.
I was given monthly meetings with my mentor (one of the company directors) throughout my placement year as well as regular meetings with my Team Leader in Support to catch up with my progress as well as any issues. I was always made to feel welcome to get support and guidance whenever needed outside scheduled meetings.
During my placement, I was kept quite busy with my role as a Support Consultant as it required learning about the Pinnacle Dealer Management System software that Pinewood produces and supports in-house. The variety of support queries raised meant that each day was different and a new challenge to tackle.
My role as a Support Consultant carried a lot of responsibility as I was dealing with customer data and providing advice and support on various issues which required me to be up to date with product knowledge as well as making decisions as to how cases will be dealt and ensuring that urgent tasks were prioritized as my role was the first point of call for customer facing a problem.
I believe my placement year helped to developed my interpersonal skills such as public speaking, presenting, communicating via different mediums such as emails, telephone and face to face. Also, the general experience of working in a commercial environment helped to put academic theory into perspective in a practical situation.
The Company
The atmosphere was lively and welcoming
The overall placement was organized well and feedback for improvements were taken on board for the following year's intake of placement year students.
The company invested in training course both for professional and personal training that helped improve skills for my Support role as well as public speaking and presenting.
National Travel
Placement students are able to get a head start on the Pinewood Graduate Development which helps them to develop their career upon return after graduation.
The Culture
Fellow placement students were encouraged to interact both within the organization and outside.
I lived at home in Birmingham so this was the same for me.
