The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. It was hard work but I learnt so much on the job and it's provided me with valuable consulting experience.
Really valued - I was given proper work to do and not just photocopying etc. I was also given a lot of feedback on my work, which enabled me to improve in the areas I was lacking in during the eight weeks.
I was given a lot of support by my people manager and then also my superiors on each project. My people manager met with me each week and asked all about what I was doing, and then arranged for me to be on different projects which developed different skills.
I'd say I was busy about 90% of the time. The 10% I wasn't busy was in-between projects or waiting for new data to come in from the clients on a project. The people I worked with on teams were keen to have me doing stuff and so I never felt like I was waiting around much.
Quite a lot - I was often given my own slides to do in a presentation, and quite a lot of my own quantitative and qualitative research went into my colleagues' slides.
I learnt a lot on this internship. My excel skills improved immeasurably, as well as my writing skills, and ability to be concise and to the point on presentation slides. My networking skills also improved, and I made great relationships with a lot of my colleagues. I learnt exactly what it was like to work as a consultant by doing exactly the same work as my colleagues - something you wouldn't get from other work experiences, I imagine.
The Company
Great - quite relaxed and you were able to have a joke with colleagues, but at the same time lots of work was getting done. Also fun casual fridays! Relatively good female/male ratio too.
Pretty well organised, in part because my people manager moved me on to different projects so I could learn as many things as possible. The overall structure firm-wide could have been better - the internship training days we had sometimes felt like a bit of a waste of time.
Quite a lot - as I said my people manager was great and moved me through projects. People were keen for me to help them and do proper work - meaning I learnt a lot. Also I was able to go to client meetings and take part in client phone calls which was great.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing - great salary and quick progression through the ranks. Lots to achieve so a lot of motivation to do so!
The Culture
Relatively good, though I felt more could have been done within the London office to get the interns together, and especially more within my individual part.
Quite expensive - canteen at work was pretty cheap but restaurants and cafes near by were pretty costly. Obviously then travel costs as well, but it depends where you live - some of my colleagues were able to walk to work.
Pretty bad - not nearly as good as central London. Though it's very easy to get to central London from the office so that wasn't too bad.
Not really - not for the interns at least. It would have been good to have more possibilities to join sports teams etc. but there wasn't really that. Think that might be something you do with out-of-work friends though.
